Partnering with the Lewiston-Auburn Community Forest Board, the Lake Auburn Community Center was awarded a Maine Forestry Service, Project Canopy Grant #13-DG-076 which was implemented throughout the summer and is near complete. $7,230 dollars from this grant program netted an additional $20,770 of actual cash and in-kind contributions to the project.
The new Street Tree nursery, located at 115 North Auburn Road in Auburn is cooperative effort to plant a variety of trees that will be suitable for Lewiston and Auburn Public Works for street side beautification; replacement inventory and new development projects to maintain and expand the current municipal canopy¬† A source of trees for a purposeful canopy for city living and a move that will strengthen the community’s Tree City USA status.
By using volunteer groups like the students of the Androscoggin Valley Education Cooperative (AVEC) and their most recent planting on 9/25; and corporate sponsors like Procter & Gamble-Tambrands (Community Days), and many other volunteer groups, the costs are minimized which reduces the burden on the tax-payer and provides another means for the public to get involved with LA’s community forests, hosting a variety of recreational and conservation initiatives.
To get involved, the Forest Board meets every third Thursdays at 7pm, alternating between Lewiston City Hall and Auburn, next meeting November 20th in Auburn.¬† More on the (Lake Auburn Community Property) on Facebook and at lakeauburn.org……Please check us out!pc10 (2)
