Partnering with the Lewiston-Auburn Community Forest Board, the Lake Auburn Community Center was awarded a Maine Forestry Service, Project Canopy Grant #13-DG-076 which was implemented throughout the summer and is near complete. $7,230 dollars from this grant program netted an additional $20,770 of actual cash and in-kind contributions to the project.
The new Street Tree nursery, located at 115 North Auburn Road in Auburn is cooperative effort to plant a variety of trees that will be suitable for Lewiston and Auburn Public Works for street side beautification; replacement inventory and new development projects to maintain and expand the current municipal canopy  A source of trees for a purposeful canopy for city living and a move that will strengthen the community’s Tree City USA status.
By using volunteer groups like the students of the Androscoggin Valley Education Cooperative (AVEC) and their most recent planting on 9/25; and corporate sponsors like Procter & Gamble-Tambrands (Community Days), and many other volunteer groups, the costs are minimized which reduces the burden on the tax-payer and provides another means for the public to get involved with LA’s community forests, hosting a variety of recreational and conservation initiatives.
